My hotel price dropped after I booked: what can I do?

You booked your hotel a few weeks ago. Today, out of curiosity, you check again: the same stay is now cheaper. Frustrating? Not necessarily. In many cases, you can get the difference back in a few minutes.

Why hotel prices change after you book

Hotels adjust their rates constantly based on demand, the season, events in the city and the number of rooms still available. The same stay can drop, then rise again, several times before you arrive.

It is not a mistake or a scam: it is simply how hotel pricing works. The good news is that you can take advantage of it.

Step 1: check whether your booking has free cancellation

Everything depends on the conditions of your booking. Open your confirmation email and look for:

  • Free cancellation: you can cancel at no cost until a specific date. This is the ideal case.
  • Non-refundable: the rate was often cheaper at first, but you cannot cancel without losing your money.

Write down the free cancellation deadline. After that date, cancelling will cost you.

Step 2: compare exactly the same offer

Before celebrating, make sure you are comparing the same thing:

  • the same dates and number of guests;
  • the same room type;
  • the same conditions (breakfast included or not, free cancellation or not);
  • the total price, including taxes and fees.

A cheaper rate that is non-refundable, or without breakfast, is not always a good deal.

Step 3: book the new rate, then cancel the old one

This is the most important step, and the order matters:

  1. Book first the new, lower rate.
  2. Check that you received the new confirmation.
  3. Then cancel the old booking, before the free cancellation deadline.

If you cancel first, the room may disappear or the price may go back up in the meantime. You could end up without a hotel.

Mistakes to avoid

  • Missing the free cancellation deadline: this is the most common mistake.
  • Forgetting a prepayment: if you already paid, the refund for the old booking can take several days. Make sure you have enough on your account for the new one.
  • Keeping two bookings by mistake: always check that the cancellation is confirmed by email.
  • Looking at only one website: the same hotel does not always have the same price on every platform.

What if my booking is non-refundable?

In that case, cancelling without fees is usually not possible. You can still politely contact the hotel: some will occasionally agree to change your dates or make a gesture, but nothing is guaranteed. For your next trips, a booking with free cancellation gives you more freedom.

The hardest part: remembering to check again

The method is simple. The real challenge is remembering to do it at the right time, before the cancellation deadline. Add the date to your calendar, or let Prixofy send you a free reminder at D-14, D-7 and D-3.
